Watermark West Quay Footbridge

Watermark West Quay is a major new retail development in Southampton and in September we installed a new 42m span bridge which creates a link between the existing car park and the new Watermark Building. The 4.2m wide bridge is formed with a lattice diagrid framing to which are added the roof cladding and bolted glass side panels. The structure had to be fully supported on its own slender columns either side of Harbour Parade as no vertical loads could be imposed on the adjacent buildings. Using a 500te capacity mobile crane the bridge was lifted in two sections each weighing around 30te. The connection between the two halves was supported on trestles and secured with bolted cleats until the primary members could be site welded and the temporary works removed. SH Structures scope included the design, manufacture and installation of the bridge along with the glazing and other finishes. We have subsequently completed the installation of a feature spiral staircase for the development which is due to be opened to the public in December.
