Swansea Central Footbridge

The Swansea Central development, which is part of the City’s ongoing regeneration programme, includes a new 3,500 capacity indoor arena, commercial and residential units along with an iconic new footbridge supplied and installed by SH Structures. The striking 50m long curved perforated structure was designed by Acme Architects and Ney & Partners and will be a fitting gateway to the new arena. The cut-outs, which are based upon a Swan design, are the work of artist Marc Rees will add to the structures’ distinctive appearance. At 12m wide, the structure was delivered to site in sections and assembled in an area close to the site before being moved and installed using self-propelled motorised transport units (SPMT’s). The finished structure, with its gold colour scheme will be lit by a colour changing LED lighting system. When opened, the new bridge is expected to carry thousands of pedestrians and cyclists over the busy Oystermouth Road, and no doubt become a welcome new landmark for the city.
