Newport Station

The redevelopment of Newport Station was completed in time for the opening of the Ryder Cup Golf tournament in October 2010. The Grimshaw designed scheme provides a functional energy efficient modern station that now sits in the heart of the Welsh City. The brief was to link the three operational platforms and create a station that allowed passengers to flow freely through the terminal structures and on and off their trains.

The finished steel frame structure manufactured and installed by SH Structures presented a number of challenges during its construction not least the need to install the primary structures during rail possessions on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The building was split into large sub-assemblies which where possible were clad and services fitted before being lifted into place. Typically the project was developed using a 3D model into which we had to detail all the various interfacing materials including the cladding and ETFE foil cushions.
