National Indoor BMX Arena, Manchester

Situated alongside the existing Velodrome the BMX Arena which opened in August 2011 provides a venue for riders of all abilities from beginners to elite athletes like the UK’s World Champion BMX rider Shanaze Reade. The track has been built to international standards and can hold up to 2000 spectators during events.

The largest facility of its kind in the UK and the second largest in the world the BMX Arena relies on triangular tubular trusses to achieve the long open spans required to create the uninterrupted column free space required. The arena has a physical link to the velodrome housing a reception area, restaurant, retail outlets and various offices. SH Structures were appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine to provide all the structural steelwork for the 10,000m2 arena and the link building.
