M62 Greystone Road Footbridge

The new Greystone Road footbridge over the M62 was officially opened by The Mayor of Knowsley on 18 November 2015. The new bridge supplied and installed by SH Structures replaces the old bridge, known locally as the ‘sausage bridge’, which helped generations of the local community to safely cross the M62 since it opened in 1973. That structure had reached the end of its serviceable life and was demolished in August. The new replacement footbridge is a centrally supported cable stay bridge with an overall span of 80m and a deck width of 3m.

The bridge installation took place during weekend night time road closures with the works being coordinated by principal contractor Eric Wright Civil Engineering. With full lane closures in place it was possible to use a 200te mobile crane set up in the carriageways to erect the two spans and the central A frame mast. The decks are supported using a series of tensioned 35mm dia. sheathed open spiral strand cables supplied by Redaelli. The pedestrian parapets feature bespoke mild steel supports with internal stainless steel mesh panels providing a safe route for the anticipated traffic of over 400 users per day including many local children travelling to and from school.
