M20 East Street Bridge

In August 2016, an HGV carrying an excavator, hit the underside of the East Street Footbridge pushing one of the spans off its bearings and onto the carriageway beneath. As a result of the collision the old structure had to be removed and replaced. The continuous twin span truss bridge tapers in profile from 4.2m to 1.4m giving the structure its distinctive appearance. With the only access to the bridge for deliveries from the motorway, this was a logistically challenging project to deliver, particularly for the ‘off-line’ approach structures. Careful sequencing of activities was key to buildability. The bridge was installed during a road closure using a pair of mobile cranes set up in the carriageway.
