Greatham South Flood Alleviation Scheme – Seal and Bird Hides

As part of the Greatham South Flood Alleviation Scheme, SH Structures were delighted to work with the Environment Agency, the RSPB, the BMMJV and Leeds Beckett University to provide two new bespoke structures for the project. The perforated weathering steel structures act as viewing hides so locals can enjoy the birds and seals that visit the inter-tidal habitat of Greatham Creek.

An award winner at the 2019 Structural Steel Design awards, the judges commented: ‘An enlightened client, and an innovative response from architecture students at Leeds Beckett University, has resulted in two truly unique hide structures. The existing conventional wood hides had to be removed as part of a flood alleviation scheme. Their replacements are formed from sculpted weathering steel and provide a legacy to be enjoyed by visitors to this vibrant wildlife area.’
