A52 Meadow Lane Footbridge

The A52 Meadow Lane Footbridge is a key infrastructure project for the Derby City Council that forms the critical link between the residential area of Chaddesden, and the Wyvern and Pride Park area, home of Derby County Football Club.

The new bridge was designed to replace an existing post-tensioned concrete footbridge which was narrow and not fit for purpose, considering it might be used by up to 20,00 fans on match day. Following numerous complaints, the replacement bridge was commissioned as part of the Derby CC’s wider A52 Wyvern Transport Improvement Scheme.

When the project was started nobody could have predicted the pandemic that has had such a huge impact across the world. The bridge span was due for installation in April 2020 however the lift had to be postponed so that a safe system of work could be developed to take account of social distancing.

A collaborative approach between the client, engineer, main contractor Galliford Try, and SH Structures resulted in a successful installation and a project which has been very well used since its’ opening in October 2020.
