Slough Bus Station

Slough Bus Station has been listed as one of the world’s best designed bus stations and was constructed as part of the ‘Heart of Slough’ Masterplan. The sinuous curved aluminium clad building and canopy is 130m long creating a modern transport interchange close to the existing main line station.

SH Structures were involved during the early development of the project and were instrumental in the use of a tubular steel support structure for the canopy. Whilst the cost of tubular steel is higher than conventional open section members the efficiency of the design using the full extent of the hollow sections properties made its choice appropriate for this structure. Our ability to create a bracket system for the aluminium shingle cladding with cleats positioned around the circumference of the CHS members solved the problem of dealing with the complex geometry of the structure; something which would have been harder to achieve using open section members. The site installation was carried using mobile cranes and mobile elevated work platforms and was carried out safely and quickly as all the interfacing members and assemblies had been trial assembled in our works before going to site.
