Norwich footbridge receives a Commendation at 2012 Structural Steel Design Awards

The Jarrold Bridge in Norwich was visited by the judges earlier this year and the judges described the bridge as 'being sensitive to its setting and the topography'. Also stating that 'the beautifully crafted structure gives an  impression of already being well established in its setting'. We are delighted with the positive comments and pleased the efforts of the delivery team of Ramboll, Bidwells, RG Carter and ourselves have been recognized.




Jarrold Bridge wins Institution of Civil Engineers Eastern of England Merit Award

This award is the highest presented to a project by the Institution and we are delighted to have been involved with this bridge, which has been exceptionally well received by the people who use the bridge on a daily basis. The design by Ramboll uses no applied treatments resulting very limited ongoing maintenance of the structure. Fabricated with weathering steel and having a hardwood timber deck, the scheme has also been shortlisted for the British Construction Industry Awards and the 2012 Steel Design Awards.




2012 Steel Design Awards

Two of SH Structures projects completed in 2011 have been selected for review by the judges for this years Steel Design Awards. The judges will visit Slough Bus Station and Jarrold Bridge in Norwich in the coming weeks and hopefully one or both may be short-listed for the awards later this year.






ICE London Civil engineering Awards 2012

Peter’s Bridge in Norwich has been short-listed for the ‘Engineered in London’ Award, which is a new award category for 2012. This award, which is for projects of excellence outside London, but that have been developed by teams in based in the capital. The project was entered by Consultants Rambolls’ London office with whom SH Structures worked on this design and build scheme. Simply to be short-listed for this prestigious award is a great achievement.




Tekla Structures 3d Model Competition 2011

The SH Structures drawing office staff were delighted to receive an award for the their work on the ‘Forum’ Project which is part of the redevelopment of the Exeter University Streatham Campus. The successful delivery of such a complicated structure relies a great deal on the ability to produce a detailed 3d model to control the design and fabrication process. SH Structures have been working with Tekla for many years and the software makes a major contribution to the execution of our work.




Network Rail Partnership Awards 2011

SH Structures recently attended the Network Rail Partnership Awards held at London’s Natural History Museum.  SH Structures worked as a critical key subcontractor with Galliford Try Rail and the team were rewarded by winning the Best Medium Project (Value £3m - £20m) for the work on Newport Station.
The awards are presented for excellence and best practice to organizations that have worked with Network Rail to help deliver their aims and objectives over the past year.




Construction News Specialists in Construction Awards 2011

SH Structures have won Steelwork category for a third time having previously been successful in 2007 and 2009. The awards, held this year at London’s Hilton Hotel celebrate the contribution made by specialist contractors. The judges praised SH structures continuing ability to be innovative and at the forefront of their sector. We are delighted to have been a winner in these awards and be recognised for our contribution to the market by our industry peers.




2010 Steel Design Awards

The A40 Perryn Road footbridge in Acton was awarded a Commendation at this years’ awards held in London. The judges commented saying ‘Steelwork is used imaginatively in this high quality scheme for a very constrained and challenging site in a residential area. Crossing one of London’s busiest arteries, the skewed deck on cantilevered supports, with spiral staircases and compact stacked ramps, provides access for all types of users. A well considered and executed urban design produces a robust yet elegant solution’




British Construction Industry Awards 2010

At this years prestigious event the Civil Engineering Award went to the A40 Western Avenue Bridges Replacement Project which includes the SH Structures Perryn Road footbridge.




2009 Steel Design Awards

SH Structures were double winners at this years Steel Design Awards picking up an award for the Cabot Circus Roof project and a Commendation for the Cabot Circus MSCP footbridge. Of all the awards the company has been associated with over the years, it is the Steel Design Awards that have the most significance for us. Having our work and our achievements recognised is always a pleasure but winning at the Steel Design Awards is always very special.




Construction News Specialists in Construction Awards 2009

SH Structures have been named the winner in the Steelwork category at this years’ Specialist Awards presented by the Construction News. Having won the award in 2007 it is great to get the continued recognition of the industry for our work.
The event is one that the company is delighted to be associated with as it actively promotes the contribution made to the construction industry by specialist contractors like ourselves.




The Saltire Society Civil Engineering Project Award 2009

The M8 footbridge at Harthill between Glasgow and Edinburgh has been awarded the Civil Engineering project Award for 2009. The Award is made jointly with the Saltire Society and the Scottish Association of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and is intended to encourage the highest standards in the design, conservation, environmentally sustainable construction and construction of civil engineering projects in Scotland. SH Structures delivered this landmark structure as partner of within the D&B team of Buro Happold and Raynesway Construction.




Alnwick Gardens Pavilion and Visitors Centre North East Winner

Alnwick Garden Pavilion was honoured at the Royal Institute of British Architects Awards. The judges felt the emphasis on sustainability, which included the timber gridshell roof, complemented the scheme’s careful planning. They said: “This is a complex scheme but it has a clear design vision and is innovative in its use of materials.” SH Structures supplied and installed this complex steel and timber grid shell structure.




Civic Trust Awards 2008

The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. Awards are given to projects of the highest quality design. The Cold War Exhibition at the RAF Museum Cosford supplied and erected by SH Structures has been presented with Special Sustainability Award. The scheme designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley provides a stunning backdrop for displaying the aircraft and other exhibits relating to this fascinating period of history.




Institution of Structural Engineers Awards 2007

Established in 1968, the Structural Awards are the industry’s most prestigious awards ceremony, celebrating international excellence in structural engineering. The SH Structures project the Savill Building in the Royal gardens near Windsor has received the highest award, the Supreme Award for Engineering Excellence. The project designed by Glenn Howells Architects with Buro Happold as Structural Engineers has a stunning curved timber grid shell roof supported on curved tubular steel structure supplied and installed by SH Structures.




ECCS European Steel Design Awards 2007

The Cold War Exhibition at the RAF Museum Cosford was one of nineteen projects to be selected for an award at a recent ceremony held in Luxembourg. The European Steel Design Awards are given by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) every two years to encourage the creative and outstanding use of steel in architecture and construction. To have a project be selected, as the UK’s winning entry is a great honour and we are delighted to be flying the flag for the UK steel industry.




Structural Steel Design Awards 2007

Two SH Structures projects were successful at this years Structural Steel Design Awards, The Cold war Exhibition at the RAF Museum Cosford received a Commendation and the Alnwick Gardens Pavilion and Visitors Centre received a special award for composite steel and timber structures. This double win for the company is really a great achievement and we are delighted that both these exciting projects have been rewarded.




Building Awards 2007 Specialist Contractor of the Year

SH Structures were named Specialist contractor of the Year at a recent ceremony held in London. The awards, hosted by Building Magazine, recognise the contribution made by specialist suppliers and subcontractors and the major contribution they make to the construction industry.

2007 is the first year SH Structures have entered these prestigious industry awards and to win the Steelwork category is fantastic. We feel the recognition of specialist contractors like ourselves is very important as companies like SH Structures play a vital role in delivering construction projects throughout the UK and Overseas. We are delighted with our win and would certainly recommend entry into the awards by other specialist contractors.




Wood Awards 2006

The Alnwick gardens Pavilion project received a commendation at this years ceremony at the Carpenter’s Hall in London.
The aim of the Wood Awards is to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in wood. Whilst SH Structures are recognized as one of the UK’s leading structural steel companies their ability to deal with other materials in composite structures such as the Alnwick grid shell roof, provides clients with a more comprehensive service when it comes to the installation of complex structures.




Structural Steel Design Awards 2006

The National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff has been awarded a Structural Steel Design Award. SH Structures were responsible for the supply and installation of the roof structure and its supporting steelwork as well as the support structure for the perimeter feature glazing. The judges commented that’ fine detailing and workmanship is evident in connections such as the column end castings and tie bar anchorages. Opened in February 2006, Her Majesty the Queen told Assembly Members: ‘The skill and imagination of those who’ve designed and constructed this remarkable example of modern architecture have given you a dramatic setting in which to work’
